Dear Friend:

The year 2011 has been one of major changes for The Cincinnati Horticultural Society. Limited resources in house and scarcity of opportunities to obtain significant sponsorship funds led the Board to postpone production of The Cincinnati Flower Show this year and to delay scheduling it in the future until economic conditions make it viable. In the meantime, the Society separated some of the more popular parts from the Flower Show and presented them independently for Friends and the public to enjoy. Overall, this approach has resulted in a modest build-up of cash resources and has pointed the way for planning the 2012 agenda. Trimming staff and moving headquarters to the Meade House in Symmes Township have also contributed to improving the current financial outlook.

The Society took on a "new look" in 2011, and, based on its success and overwhelming acceptance by the public, it will follow the same pattern of events and undertakings, with additions and enhancements, in 2012. On May 1 Ladies Day will repeat at its new venue at Kenwood Country Club. Later in May the young-at-heart will enjoy Spring Fling, a fund-raiser for the Society and a benefit for the deCavel Family SIDS Foundation. Enthusiasts will enjoy the 'Secret Garden Tour' in Hyde Park on June 16. From mid-June and into August, the popular Fresh Air School, an educational program for children, expanded in 2012, will be held at historic Meade House; a holiday version will repeat at the end of the year. Guess Who is Coming to Dinner, featuring the Flower Show's Dramatic Table Settings, celebrity guests and some of the area's best-known gourmet chefs, will be the highlight of a series of horticultural-related activities and lectures scheduled for the week of September 24. In October the Gardener Recognition Awards will be presented to individuals, businesses and local communities that improve the Greater Cincinnati landscape.

The Society needs your help and input in planning and providing the means to produce these quality events. Become a Friend this year to help us make 2012 another productive and successful year and to help us plan an early return of The Cincinnati Flower Show. Your gift will help us continue Cincinnati's rich horticultural heritage!
